Background of the Study

Sleep disturbances, particularly insomnia, are common among older adults and can significantly affect their physical and mental health. In Borno State, as in many regions, elderly individuals often experience poor sleep quality due to factors such as chronic pain, stress, medication side effects, and age-related changes in sleep patterns (Umar & Ibrahim, 2023). Insomnia is associated with a variety of negative outcomes, including depression, cognitive decline, and increased risk of chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes (Adeyemo & Mohammed, 2024). Given the high prevalence of insomnia in older adults, addressing sleep issues is crucial for improving their overall health and well-being.

Sleep hygiene education is a non-pharmacological intervention aimed at improving sleep quality by teaching individuals healthy sleep habits. These habits include maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a comfortable sleep environment, and avoiding stimulants before bedtime (Alhassan et al., 2024). Research has demonstrated that sleep hygiene education can significantly improve sleep quality and reduce insomnia symptoms among older adults (Zubairu & Adebayo, 2023). However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of sleep hygiene education specifically for older adults in Borno State. This study will explore the impact of sleep hygiene education on insomnia among elderly individuals in Borno State.

Statement of the Problem

Insomnia is a widespread issue among the elderly in Borno State, yet many older adults do not receive effective interventions to improve their sleep quality. Sleep hygiene education has shown promise as a cost-effective and non-invasive approach to managing insomnia, but its impact on elderly individuals in Borno State has not been adequately studied. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of sleep hygiene education in improving sleep quality and reducing insomnia symptoms in elderly adults in Borno State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effect of sleep hygiene education on insomnia among older adults in Borno State.

  2. To identify the components of sleep hygiene education that contribute to improved sleep quality in elderly individuals.

  3. To explore the challenges in implementing sleep hygiene education programs for older adults in Borno State.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is sleep hygiene education in reducing insomnia symptoms among older adults in Borno State?

  2. What components of sleep hygiene education are most beneficial in improving sleep quality among elderly individuals in Borno State?

  3. What challenges exist in implementing sleep hygiene education programs for older adults in Borno State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Sleep hygiene education significantly reduces insomnia symptoms among older adults in Borno State.

  2. Elderly individuals who receive sleep hygiene education report better sleep quality compared to those who do not receive such education.

  3. Barriers such as lack of awareness, cultural attitudes, and access to resources hinder the successful implementation of sleep hygiene education in Borno State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly individuals aged 60 and above in Borno State, specifically those experiencing insomnia. Limitations may include challenges in ensuring adherence to sleep hygiene practices and variability in the effectiveness of the intervention across different participants.

Definitions of Terms

  • Sleep Hygiene Education: Instruction on practices and habits that promote consistent, restful sleep, such as maintaining a regular sleep schedule and avoiding stimulants before bedtime.

  • Insomnia: A sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, often leading to fatigue and poor health outcomes.

  • Elderly Individuals: People aged 60 years and above, particularly those facing age-related sleep disturbances.
